Behind the Scenes: An Interior Designer’s Perspective

Hey, Y’all! Spring is in full swing, and we hope you are making the most of this warm weather! Along with the changing of the seasons, so many other changes have occurred in our world in recent months, and we wanted to pop in to give some background on how the realm of Interior Design is impacted. Ivory Lane Interiors strives to be a dedicated resource and advocate for our clients, providing info you may not always find elsewhere!

Before we dive into the economical impacts, we wanted to give a little background on some of the areas that we handle as an Interior Design service, as it relates to products, installation, and more.

Items An Interior Designer Handles

Project Coordination

Designating a project coordinator is extremely beneficial in many businesses, and that’s absolutely the case when your space is being renovated or designed from the ground up. There are so many moving parts, product orders, and vendors involved, and their timelines all need to be tracked efficiently. An Interior Designer wears the hat of the project coordinator and makes sure every piece of the project is monitored. If you think about a kitchen remodel, for example, the Interior Designer tracks the progress of the sink, cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring, and more. Some of the tasks an Interior Designer handles are: on-site check-ins, selecting and ordering products, tracking orders, communicating between everyone involved, and receiving shipments. There is never a dull moment between all parts of a project, and having an Interior Designer handle the intricate details takes a weight off our clients’ shoulders.

Client Support

Speaking of taking a weight off, an Interior Designer is an ADVOCATE for the client. With all of the moving parts we’ve mentioned, any project could have something unexpected occur, and my job as the Designer is to anticipate those surprises and look out for your best interest. Whether it’s an installation question from a contractor or a product being back-ordered, the Interior Designer is there to handle these items so you don’t have to. If a vendor informs us that the furniture we ordered will ship later than anticipated, we’ll create a game plan to resolve the situation and aim to have the least amount of disruption to the schedule. As the project coordinator, the Interior Designer can usually spot a problem before it ever arises, so we’re tackling it before anyone else knows something is up. We always want my clients to feel supported and stress-free knowing that someone is looking out for every single detail of their design project.

Final Reveal

Once the project wraps up and all orders have been received, our team at Ivory Lane Interiors handles the installation process and final reveal. This is something we personally LOVE being involved with for our clients! After focusing on items physically connected to the home and its design, it’s so exciting to also ensure that your space comes together with accessories and finishing touches! I make sure that all of the furnishings we’ve selected are in place and ready for you to view the space in all of its new found glory. This is one of the most rewarding parts of the process! 

The Current State of the Design World

Now that we’ve chatted through some of the items an Interior Designer juggles, we wanted to give you some additional insight on the current state of affairs overall in the design realm. As you’ve probably noticed, the supply chain has been disrupted in the past year, largely due to impacts from the Coronavirus. At the start of the pandemic, many manufacturers temporarily halted production lines to protect their employees, and various imports and exports were stopped between countries. Both domestic and international deliveries were impacted as quarantines began and some level of road and air travel were suspended. 

With all of these factors coming into play during the same time, there are ripple effects that have caused delays in many consumer products. The area of manufacturing is one that directly impacts the design world, and it is one that has been hit hard over the past year. There has been an unexpected demand for products during this timeframe, but supplies have been slower in production and lower in volume. Many manufacturers opened back up after just a short period of closure, but the logistics of where they purchase supplies from were disrupted. With increased demand and shorter supply, we’ve seen increases in costs and longer wait times for ordering products. This includes furnishings like couches, dining tables, flooring, and more. For new constructions, the supply and cost of lumber has been impacted. 

We know that all of this will pass and that the supply chain will eventually catch up and normalize. Nothing lasts forever, friends! In the meantime, our goal at Ivory Lane Interiors is to ensure that processes continue to run smoothly, and we will always inform you of how the state of manufacturing may affect the furnishings you’d like to order or the construction of your home. We want to gear you with the information that you deserve to understand why there may be a longer wait for certain items or a slightly higher cost than what we were used to seeing before the pandemic. It’s a strange world we’re living in, y’all, but we’re all in this together! We are excited that things are slowly getting back to normal in many areas of life and will keep you updated on how things progress with manufacturing supplies!

Laundry Room Revamp with an Elegant Pop of Color

Hey, Y’all! I hope you’re enjoying this spring season and all the fun activities that come along with warmer weather! I know I’m personally LOVING spending more time outdoors these days (just not the yellow stuff sprinkled everywhere, am I right 😉)! With that extra time exploring outside, another thing that many of us don’t necessarily enjoy may increase, and that’s laundry! For those with families, you definitely know what I’m talking about! Laundry can turn into a full-time job, so it’s beneficial to have a laundry space that brings you a little joy, even while you’re tackling some general housekeeping! 

With that said, I’m so excited to share with you a recent laundry room revamp that we completed! If you’re looking for some inspiration on how this space in your home can be taken to the next level, this is it, y’all! 

Where It Started 

When our clients approached Ivory Lane Interiors about a laundry room revamp, they had just moved into a home that was new to them but that had been built a few years prior. Like many modern new-construction homes, theirs included standard white, builder-grade cabinets inside the laundry room and was essentially a blank palette overall. The room contained a utility sink but didn’t have a dedicated space to fold laundry. Those standard cabinets were also less than ideal for optimizing storage and organization in the space. It was simply a basic shell for a laundry room that had room to grow in order to be the most efficient!

Color and Cabinetry

Our clients wanted this room to feel completely rejuvenated and more exciting than the blank, white aesthetic that was present when they found it. When we started, they had already replaced the original flooring with fun, new tilework that incorporated a pop of navy blue into the room. Playing off of this color scheme, we decided to replace the existing cabinetry with navy cabinets that truly make a statement in the room. Navy provides an inviting pop of color that’s warm and fun but still somewhat neutral. In order to optimize storage space, we chose extended cabinets, which are often used in kitchens to house a built-in microwave. This type of cabinetry is deeper and provides more room for storage baskets and organization overall. It’s all about getting the most out of the space you have, and this truly makes a difference! 

Counters and Hardware

To maintain a modern and warm aesthetic, we chose to incorporate quartz countertops that have the appearance of concrete. This countertop selection not only plays into the industrial chic vibe but is also extremely durable. As we often say at Ivory Lane Interiors, beauty should always tie together with functionality! The gorgeous texture of the quartz is just a stunning contrast with the fun tile floors and navy cabinetry. Last but not least, we finished off this laundry revamp with updated hardware all around and new lighting. These are items that can’t be overlooked when refreshing a space, and it’s an understatement to say that they go a long way! To ensure continuity throughout the home overall, our selections for hardware and lighting mirrored what could be found throughout the rest of the house. It’s all about the details, y’all! 

So, this laundry room truly went from one that didn’t stand out at all to a bright, highly functional, inviting space that just might make you excited to do some laundry! We think our clients will enjoy this part of their home for years to come and find their new level of storage so helpful in maintaining organization. Tying Together Efficiency with Beauty in Your Kitchen

Hey Y’all, and Happy April 1st! Can you believe it’s April already?! It’s seriously no joke that this year has flown by, but we are thrilled that spring is in full swing! As you’re considering ways to switch things up for this season, we want to chat about some of our favorite tips for a space in your home that you may spend more time in these days! I know I’ve personally been in my kitchen even more than usual these past months testing new recipes for home cooking, so making sure this space is set up efficiently and in a way I can enjoy is SO important! We think you’ll find these tips handy too, so grab yourself a glass of lemonade and keep reading! 

Beauty with Purpose

We’ve said it before and will say it again...interior design is truly about creating a space that’s beautiful AND functional, and your kitchen is no exception! If you have stunning cabinetry, drawers, and appliances that don’t actually serve your needs and lifestyle effectively, it’s going to make daily tasks more difficult than they should be. The good news is that an intentional design plan ties together both the aesthetic and practical functionality, and your kitchen will be even more enjoyable when these two meet. So, how can you make life in your kitchen more practical?  

Well, it’s all about the tools you put in place! If we’re honest, we could all use a little more organization in our lives, am I right? Understanding how to prioritize and effectively organize goes such a long way in making our everyday kitchen tasks run smoother and faster. Here are some gadgets and hardware we’ve found that we LOVE and that will truly level up your kitchen’s organization! 

1. Drawer Organizers

Have you ever seen such a dream come true?? This tool is the perfect fix for those moments of frustration when you just can’t get the saran wrap to come out in one piece. (How does it always end up in such a jumbled mess?!) It’s so nice to know that you can save time grabbing a piece of wax paper with this handy setup. The drawer organizer also creates a consistent look for your foil, saran wrap, and wax paper to help you achieve the ultimate clean and tidy aesthetic. The labels are such a small but helpful detail so you can find the material you’re looking for even more quickly!

2. Pull-Out Garbage Bins

One choice of kitchen cabinetry options that we always advise is a hidden, pull-out trash can. Without deviating from the look of the surrounding cabinets, you can easily tuck away the unwanted garbage bin by housing it inside of a tall, pull-out drawer that is specifically meant for this purpose. Being able to do away with a standalone trash can in the middle of your kitchen goes a long way in organizing and maintaining a beautiful aesthetic for the space. Many times, these drawers allow enough space for both a standard trash can and a recycling bin - win win! With this, you know that these bins are always in the same place, so it’s a quick find when it’s time to remove the garbage and recycling! (Every second counts when you’re on the go, y’all!) 

3. Extended Drawers

While we’re on the topic of drawers, making sure all drawers in your kitchen are efficient makes a huge difference! Incorporating extended drawers is an extremely practical and helpful choice so you can see everything in your drawer at once when it’s pulled out. Nothing will get lost in the dark back corners, like what can happen in standard drawers, and you’ll be able to quickly get your hands on what you’re looking for. These help save time and frustration, and, once you have extended drawers in your kitchen or home in general, you’ll never want to go back to anything different! 

4. Cabinet Pulls

Something that seems simple and that can be understated is the choice of cabinet pulls in your kitchen. Many times, we focus on the finish and look alone when choosing hardware for cabinetry, but, believe it or not, the length of cabinet pulls makes a difference in the ease of operating your drawers! A general rule of thumb is to choose a pull that is approximately ⅓ the length of your drawer. This length also offers a more pleasing aesthetic, creating a cleaner and more contemporary look for the space. When we say design is all about the details, y’all, we mean it!

5. Kitchen Storage

Last but certainly not least, storage options are so important for your kitchen! Your storage can and should be a stunning statement in your kitchen that makes life easier and more efficient. We can all use more storage in our kitchens (seems like there’s never enough!), and, if you have the option for it in your space, incorporating custom cabinetry is the perfect solution! We designed this custom China cabinet piece for our client a while back, and it’s still one of our FAVORITE storage projects. It precisely matches the clean, white cabinetry throughout the rest of the kitchen, and it has practical drawer and cabinet space for dishes, silverware, table linens, and more. While adding beautiful character to the kitchen space, it serves its functional purpose by housing specific dining items and makes daily life in the kitchen that much easier.

Making a Big Impact in a Small Space

Hey, Y’all! I hope March is off to a great start for you! How about that extra hour of daylight we have as of yesterday?! I am so grateful spring is just around the corner and will personally be taking full advantage of more sunshine in the afternoon - that one hour just makes such a difference! Speaking of that, today we wanted to chat about how to approach a small space and still make a big impact through design choices. Let’s get started! 

Tackling the Space

Maybe there’s an area of your home that you’ve been avoiding when it comes to decorating or organizing because, well, you just aren’t sure how to finish it. Whether there are tricky dimensions involved or you’ve just never had a vision for it, there can be a solution for your space’s challenges that will allow you to enjoy it to the fullest! Sometimes it’s a matter of creating a focal point in the room to embrace the simplicity of the space, and other times it’s choosing the best paint colors that fit the area well. The main point is to take advantage of the space you do have and find furnishings and textures that suit its size. To share some of our tips and tricks, we’ve included a few examples of small-space projects Ivory Lane Interiors has worked on in the past! 

The Loft

Our first example is a cozy loft with limited space, and we had so much fun helping our client make the most of this space’s potential! To make the biggest impact in the dimensions at hand, it came down to choosing furniture and accessories that were both functional and statement pieces. Since the dining area is a part of the small, open floor plan with the living area and kitchen, we chose a gorgeous, full-size mirror to be positioned beside the two-seater dining table. This allows for the entire area to feel larger, breathable, and more open. We also opted to take advantage of the balcony and create an extension of the dining area on the exterior of the home. This provides flexibility for eating arrangements for our client and additional seating when hosting guests. 

To keep the space airy and open, we selected furnishings with lighter tones and minimalist designs but also incorporated colors and patterns that act as focal points in the room and keep the space cozy. One example is the honeycomb pattern of the office sitting chair. Its palette is light, while its design acts as a statement piece in the room, along with the warm color choice of its ottoman. Every throw pillow, blanket, and accessory was intentionally chosen to make the space feel warm and inviting while appearing open and spacious. It’s a matter of selecting items that contrast just enough without competing, and your space doesn’t have to remain a blank, white room to feel roomy!

The Mudroom with Storage

One space you may feel stuck with and not necessarily view as having design potential is a mudroom! Another client came to us with the goal of creating purpose for a completely underutilized area of their home - in fact, the space was previously just a hallway housing a small desk! We decided that this area could serve this family better by being remodeled into a mudroom with storage space. This was one example of one of our favorite tips for making a small space feel bigger, and that’s designing upward! As you can see, there isn’t a lot of real estate here, but, by incorporating built-in organization units that extend from floor to ceiling, we truly made the most of this space. The midnight black walls create a warm aesthetic, while the beautiful, maplewood of the shelving system feels bright and roomy. Cozy, textured baskets were placed in the cubbies to create statement focal points in the space, while serving their purpose of discreet organization. We LOVE that this former-hallway became such a valuable asset to our client’s family! 

The Master Bathroom Cabinetry

Our last example is from a total overhaul of an 80s master bathroom whose design was no longer working effectively for our client. This master bath previously housed a bathtub/shower combo in its own room behind a closed door. Since this particular area was limited but the rest of the master bath was quite spacious, we decided to completely do away with the shower in this room and add a separate frameless shower and soaking tub in the larger space. This choice served a few purposes - it allowed for the shower and soaking tub to act as stunning focal points in the larger portion of the master bath, and it allowed for us to create a vastly different vision for the small, private room. To make the most of the small space, we opted to place the toilet there on its own and incorporate floor to ceiling cabinetry! This is an example of how color choices can affect a room. Keep in mind - you don’t have to fear using dark colors in a small space! While the walls and flooring inside this private bathroom are crisp white, we chose a dark stain for the cabinetry to create a beautiful contrast. The combination of a bright palette with this eye-catching dark cabinetry works flawlessly to create a cozy yet open feeling for the room. Not to mention - now our client can enjoy ample storage and organization!

Spring Cleaning With A Design Twist

Hey, Y’all! First off, we hope you’ve made it safely through the crazy period of snow, ice, rain, and more! February was quite the adventurous month for everyone, so we’re personally looking forward to more calm and sunny days in March! With Spring just around the corner, we thought it’d be helpful to chat about something many of us tackle (or think about tackling) when the warmer weather starts...spring cleaning with a design twist!

So, if you’ve considered refreshing your home this spring by extensively organizing or swapping out accessories, this is just the blog for you! Let’s dive right into some of Ivory Lane Interior’s suggestions for simple but effective ways to reinvigorate your space for the upcoming season.  

Organization

The first method of refreshing your home for spring is by organizing. From purchasing storage containers and decluttering your rooms to fully reconfiguring your closet space with new shelving units, the options are truly endless for breathing new life into your space! There are so many seemingly small organizational tasks that can really make your home feel refreshed and even more enjoyable.

If you have a walk-in pantry, have you considered finding labeled containers for those dry goods or matching baskets for individual items like chip bags? Or, if you’ve got an office space that quickly becomes the holding room for any item or box that doesn’t have a designated space, it can make such a big difference to prioritize where those items should go and then relocate them. Do you ever find yourself frustrated searching for seasonings in your cabinets? You could place them all in a large drawer face-up so that their labels are easy to scan over when you’re trying to find the Paprika for a dinner dish! Whether it’s a small or big project, we always feel so rewarded by just thinking through what would make our lives easier day-to-day and organizing our space in a way that would help. 

One of our clients recently came to us hoping to revitalize a small hallway in their home that was underutilized. Once we saw this space, we suggested our vision of transforming this area into a mudroom with beautiful built-ins and invaluable storage space. Now, the family can toss loose items into storage cubes and leave those muddy cleats in a designated place before entering the house (because we all know nobody has time to clean any mud from our beautiful furniture and floors)! We LOVE the way this turned out and how beneficial it is! 

Updates

Another method of reinvigorating your home this spring is to complete an update that you can enjoy far beyond this season and for years to come! When we say update, we’re thinking of projects like adding an accent wall to your dining room or installing some new backsplash around your kitchen counter. And the best part: these changes don’t have to be terribly expensive or time-consuming to make you feel like you’re in a new space! We recently installed the accent wall below for a client, and the color and texture of the new pattern MADE this dining room feel like the warm, inviting space they wanted. Without involving a massive renovation, you can update your space with new tile, fresh paint, or a set of French doors and create the statement that your space has been longing for.

Refresh

If you’re hoping to keep your spring cleaning a little more straightforward, we also recommend simple refreshes for your space to make a noticeable difference! You may consider how long it’s been since you’ve changed the frames and bookends on your living room shelves or the lampshades in your guest bedroom - it could be time to freshen those up with a new look! Another item to think about is a throw pillow! Your couch can look like a different piece of furniture simply by changing the throw pillows to a new pattern (or adding them if you’ve never had any)! If it’s been years since your window treatments have been in place, think about another color or texture that you may enjoy being a part of your room instead. These types of changes aren’t permanent and are extremely flexible! You can always update these again during a different season to create variety in your home. Win win!

The Ultimate Guide to Window Treatments (Drapes)

Hey, Ya’ll! Happy February! I’m not sure if I’m the only one who felt this way, but January seemed like a few months rolled into one. :) 2021 is off to a great start for Ivory Lane Interiors though, and I hope it is for you, too! 

On today’s blog, we’re going to chat about a topic that I find SO important and useful for every one of us and our homes, and that’s guidance for window treatments! What seems like an easy task can often become somewhat frustrating, but it doesn’t have to! Subtle steps and details to be aware of will go a long way in creating a clean and professional look for your windows. I’m so excited to walk through this one with ya’ll, so let’s dive right in! 

So, where do you begin when choosing window treatments? The STYLE of the curtains is a great starting point! Let’s talk about patterns first.

Patterns

One tip I always try to reinforce is that the right pattern can truly create a stunning new look for your space and reinvigorate the room. Plus, the best part about window treatments is that they are flexible, in that they can easily be switched out for another pattern later to, once again, create a new look and feel for the area. It may go without saying, but a darker pattern and color scheme will lend to a more dramatic and cozy environment, while a lighter pattern will allow the space to feel a bit more airy, bright, and open. 

Texture 

Second, selecting the window treatments that are right for your space is all about the texture. When you think “texture”, consider the weight of the fabric here, which is a foundational element of a window treatment that looks professionally-styled. Linens, or sheer fabrics, are simply stunning and also very popular because of their ability to let in natural light. These types of fabrics are also not as heavy, which is important so that your curtains aren’t pulling on the rods and causing damage to your walls. 

Unlined, Lined, and Blackout Drapes

Next, you’ll want to think about your window treatments’ lining, depending on your needs and the room they’ll be placed in. There are a few lining categories: unlined, lined, and blackout. An unlined window treatment provides little protection from the light and little privacy, while a lined drape will provide more privacy but still allow some light into the space. Blackout curtains are perfect for a bedroom or a movie theatre room, as they prevent any natural light from entering the space. Whatever your area is used for, there’s a lining that will be best suited for it! 

Length

Now, how do you determine the best curtain length for your space? This can be tricky depending on unique room dimensions. One key tip to keep in mind is that you should not resort to purchasing drapes that are 84” long, despite the fact that this length is often sold in stores. The reason why: the top of a typical window itself usually measures to around 84”, so 84” curtains work properly for the typical window since you want to hang them closer to the ceiling than the molding of the window. For the most professional look, it’s best to purchase window treatments with custom dimensions for your exact space. However, an alternative is to purchase 96” long curtains and have them altered accordingly. 

To address all the details of completing your window treatments, a seamstress can come into play. They can add finishing details, like pleating and adding a weight to the bottom of your drapes, that allow your curtains to hang perfectly in your space and remain in place. It can be highly beneficial to have a professional’s touch involved either from the start or for the final details.

Three Phases of Working with Ivory Lane Interiors

Hey, Ya’ll!

I hope 2021 is off to a great start for you! It’s certainly a busy and exciting one for us at Ivory Lane Interiors! And, actually, a part of what makes our days busy (and FUN) will be talked about in this very blog post! In our last blog, we discussed six things that you might not realize an Interior Designer handles, and today we’re going to chat about what to expect when partnering with Ivory Lane Interiors for your interior design services. The responsibilities of a designer are extensive and so important to ensure your project is successful from the very start to the final reveal. Now that you know the ins and outs of our role, let’s dive into the phases of working together! 

3 Phases of Working with Ivory Lane Interiors

1. Creating a Design Plan

The first phase of working with Ivory Lane involves a detailed planning period, where we sit down with you and gather all the information about your space, your vision for it, and your lifestyle needs. Once I take in all of these details and understand your goals, I put together a tedious plan to execute on. It’s absolutely vital to have this roadmap outlined before beginning on any project and to know exactly how to get to the finish line within budget!

Speaking of the budget, this is also something that I help you tackle when we begin planning during phase one. Living inside the world of interior design day in and day out, I’m very familiar with pricing for various materials and products that you may be interested in, and I ensure I take into account how those prices fit into the overall project. Knowing the ins and outs of pricing becomes SO helpful in deciding the details of your budget.

Another item that I handle during phase one, if applicable for your project, is preparing the construction documents. This includes everything down to drawing floor plans, dimensioned plans, electrical plans, lighting plans, elevations, and building sections. Included in these drawings are also the ADA and building codes. Once it’s time to begin, I share all of these components with an Architect for review or with the Contractors for conceptual use. 

2. Managing the Project 

Like we’ve talked about before, part of an Interior Designer’s role is wearing many hats and managing every piece of your project the entire way through. Following the design plan we’ve put into place, here’s what the second phase looks like:

• I complete the ordering process for products and finishings

• I keep track of and manage these orders 

• I ensure every piece remains within the budget we’ve created 

• I handle any issues or damages that may arise with the order (ranging from a backorder to a discontinued item)

• I complete quality control of the order once it arrives

My goal for the second phase is that a HUGE weight is taken off of your shoulders so you don’t have to think about a thing during this time! As the project coordinator, I am constantly balancing moving pieces, monitoring the schedule and budget, and acting as the primary contact with vendors. Not always easy, but every part of this phase is extremely important for your project! 

3. Complete Installation and Final Touches

Once orders are in and receive my seal of approval, as the Interior Designer, I ensure that the product is properly installed during phase three. Again, part of my role is being your liaison so you don’t have to respond to any vendor or contractor questions during installation. This also means that I am YOUR advocate and will always make sure any issues are 100% resolved before the final reveal. After all, your job should only be enjoying the results! By the time you see your finished project, I’ve added the final touches down to the smallest detail, following the initial plan the entire way. And now, it’s time for you to kick back and get to living in your dream space! 😊

So, What Does an Interior Designer Really Do?

Happy New Year, Y’all!!! Can you believe it’s finally 2021?! I hope you enjoyed this Christmas season and were able to take time to reflect on what you’re thankful for, no matter how different this season may have looked for you and your family. Praying for a better and brighter year ahead for us all! 

To kick off 2021, I wanted to share some insight on a question I’ve heard a few times: “So, what does an Interior Designer really do?” I thought it would be helpful to outline exactly what goes into an Interior Designer’s role to create a successful result for clients. So, grab your glass of Welch’s Sparkling, and let’s dive in! 

The Role of an Interior Designer and Why It’s Important

I’ve heard a number of people mention that they assume an Interior Designer’s role focuses on decorating. And, yes, it’s true that Designers expertly put the pieces together when it comes to selecting fabrics, finishes, and accessories. But, there are actually a ton of other components that we handle outside of decorating! And, ya’ll, when I say a ton, I mean a TON! When it comes to remodeling and renovating a home, the Interior Designer wears many, many hats, and they are all SO important for a client’s project! 

So, what are the top 6 things that you might not realize an Interior Designer does day-to-day?

1. Create Construction Documents and Ensure Compliance with Building Codes

This is one thing that many people don’t realize an Interior Designer handles, and it’s not a stretch to say that Interior Architecture is a major component of Interior Design! One part of my job is to prepare the construction documents by drawing the floor plans, dimensioned plans, electrical plans, lighting plans, elevations, and building sections. Once I complete these conceptual drawings, they are typically reviewed by an Architect, but these pieces are ready to be shared with Contractors for conceptual use. These serve as a Designer’s instruction for the building crew that details exactly how the interior should be executed and should appear. Also included with an Interior Designer’s drawings are the ADA and building codes. 

2. Help Plan Your Budget Effectively and Manage It 

Planning the budget for your home project can be challenging and tedious, but it’s one of the most important aspects of any design process or renovation. It’s a part of an Interior Designer’s role to talk with you about your goals and to help you create a budget that ensures what’s most important to you is accomplished. An Interior Designer also has key insight on the pricing for various products and materials across the board and will inform you of which items may be worth investing in or waiting for. It’s a part of my role to help you decide which purchases make sense for your project your budget. 

3. Ensure Your Design is Functional and Efficient

One of the aspects of my role that I’m most passionate about is creating a vision where style meets function and purpose! Your space should be one that is enjoyed for years to come, and a big part of ensuring that it can be enjoyed is designing with function in mind. This is where an Interior Designer differs from a Decorator. It’s more than styling a beautiful space - it’s executing a design where simplicity, efficiency, and beauty all come together to fit your needs and style. It’s also ensuring that the way the room is navigated feels completely natural, livable, and sensible for the long term. 

4. Serve as the Client’s Project Coordinator

A project coordinator is vital in almost every business, and that’s definitely the case when designing or renovating a space. There are many moving pieces and various vendors whose timelines all need to be tracked and maintained to ensure the project remains on schedule and successful. An Interior Designer wears the hat of the project coordinator in this case, making sure every piece of the project runs smoothly for you. Take a kitchen renovation, for example. The Interior Designer tracks the sink, backsplash, tile, Some of the items an Interior Designer tackles are: on-site check-ins, ordering products, tracking products, communicating between all vendors and people involved in the process, and receiving product shipments. There is truly never a dull moment between these parts of the project, and having an Interior Designer handle all of the many details makes the process so much easier to stay on schedule and remain stress-free for you! 

5. Support the Client

On top of everything else, the Interior Designer is an ADVOCATE for the client. With so many moving parts and people, there’s bound to be something that comes up at some point with your project, and my job is to look out for YOU! Whether it’s something simple like a contractor having a question about the pattern of the tile during installation or something larger, the Interior Designer will be there to handle it so you don’t have to think about it. If a vendor informs us that a product is running late, we will quickly create a game plan to work around this while keeping the project on schedule. As the project coordinator, the Interior Designer can usually spot a problem before it ever arises, so they’re tackling it before anyone else may know it’s on the radar! Knowing you have this type of support on your side through an Interior Designer is a tremendous relief. 

6. Professionally Handle the Final Reveal

Now, this item isn’t the case 100% of the time, but I couldn’t leave it off the list since it’s something I personally LOVE handling! Like I’ve mentioned, there are differences between Interior Designers and Decorators, which is great, since they both have their specialties. Some Interior Designers tackle certain parts of both, though! Decorators typically focus on furnishings, while Designers specialize in areas physically connected to the home itself. However, it’s so exciting for me to cross over into both territories and ensure that your space comes together foundationally and with finishing touches! Seeing your vision come to life from start to finish is so rewarding for me, and making your life easier is the best part!

Behind the Scenes: Recent Revamps and Styling Tips!

Well, ya’ll, this is officially our last “Behind The Scenes” blog of 2020! It has truly been a WILD year, but there are still so many things we can be thankful for! For starters, we’re so grateful that you’ve been a part of our journey at Ivory Lane Interiors, and we can’t wait to reveal some EXCITING things we’ve been planning for 2021...so, stay tuned for those! In the meantime, we wanted to share with you a few beautiful revamps that we recently had the pleasure of working on, along with some styling tips that truly help transform a space! 

With so many of us working remotely now, or at least spending more time than normal inside our homes, this year has led to an increased desire for making our spaces more enjoyable, functional, and efficient for current needs and lifestyles. A number of our clients came to us in recent months with that very goal! To reinvigorate a particular room or repurpose a corner of their home! Ya’ll, you would not believe how simple changes to your space can drastically improve an aesthetic and help bring out the natural character of your home. It doesn’t always take a full remodel to rejuvenate a space and bring the excitement that a completely new room would bring.

For our first example, let’s take a look at this stunning dining room makeover! Our client’s existing dining room was spacious, classic, and full of potential. The goal was to transform the room into an even more luxurious and warm space for hosting and enjoying family, and accomplishing this is all in the details! You’ll notice the BEAUTIFUL accent wall below, and incorporating this molding truly took the space to the next level. What was once a simple and unassuming wall is now a statement that serves as a piece of art in the room, even with a neutral paint color. (Speaking of art, is this chandelier not stunning?!)

Our next example from a recent project is an elegant kitchen revamp. And let me just start by saying this - if you’re considering tile for your space in the slightest, don’t hesitate to incorporate it! Something as simple as adding a tile design that truly fits your space can completely transform a room for the better! For our client’s kitchen, we decided to utilize a beautiful herringbone tile for the backsplash (ya’ll, I am a TOTAL sucker for anything herringbone pattern - can I get an amen?!). This pattern provides a stunning but simple gradient design of white and gray tones. The color palette compliments the clean aesthetic of the white cabinetry without competing, while further enhancing the crisp, modern kitchen design.

Continuing the backsplash tile theme, we incorporated another tile design in the same color palette to make the stove niche truly pop. We wanted to ensure the tile used in this nook area didn’t compete with the herringbone pattern used throughout the rest of the space, so we selected the same tile but a larger subway pattern. The tones complement the stunning stainless steel range hood, while seamlessly tying in, again, with the cabinetry. Talk about a space we could all enjoy cooking in! (And we know what you’re thinking - yes, they remove these beautiful boards when the burner is being used!)

Last but certainly not least, we want to share a mudroom transformation with you! It’s not every day that you see a mudroom makeover, and it’s not always a space you’d think of reinventing. But we’re so glad that our client asks us to be a part of this revamp! What was previously a hallway housing just a small desk was really an underutilized space lacking true purpose. We decided that recreating the space as a mudroom was much more conducive to the family’s lifestyle and needs. So, we incorporated a beautiful maplewood built-in shelving system that optimizes organization in the household and creates a bright, clean aesthetic. The lighter tones of the maplewood are complemented by a stunning shiplap wall painted in a deep midnight blue. The dark storage baskets serve further as a gorgeous contrast to these cubbies, and the overall unit creates a statement piece in a previously-purposeless space. This revamp just goes to show what wonders built-ins and finishing touches do for a home!

A Master Bath Becomes A Timeless Space with a Modern Flare

Can ya’ll believe it’s already December 1st?! This year is definitely one that none of us will ever forget, and it felt like time truly stood still at times. In some ways, though, it’s hard to believe 2020 is about to come to a close. Like I mentioned in the most recent blog, we’ve spent a lot of time this year carefully curating our services for our clients’ needs, as well as planning some exciting additions for 2021! We can’t wait to share what’s next and are so grateful you’ve been a part of our journey. 

Speaking of journeys, we’ve got a stunning transformation to share with you from one of our latest remodel projects! If you’ve found yourself dreaming about how refreshing it would be for a specific area to receive a facelift, you’re certainly not alone. Most of us are spending more time in our homes now than ever, and many of our clients have expressed interest in either completely overhauling a room or two or revamping various spaces in their homes. Your needs change over time (and so do trends!), and a new design for your space can make it feel like you’re living in a brand new home again. So, keep reading if you’re ready to see a gorgeous Master Bath remodel!

Where The Remodel Began

We’ve all seen bathrooms designed in the 1980s - you can point them out almost immediately, and it’s not a bad thing! The styles of those days are highly recognizable with bold accessories, unique wallpapers, and large, frameless mirrors. These trends were widely sought after, and a home containing this type of aesthetic was a hip home! Well, flash-forward to this fall: our client was ready to see a change for her 80s master bathroom. What had worked well for this home at one time wasn’t the most efficient or current anymore, and like I mentioned before, that’s not unusual. A remodel can make a world of difference for the way we live in and enjoy a space! 

This master bathroom had a large garden tub situated as a focal point of the room, surrounded by carpeted steps, a gold chandelier, and those frameless mirrors that we all loved at one time. The same style of mirrors were positioned over the vanity area of the bathroom, and carpeting continued throughout the space. Behind another door and across vibrant blue tile was the toilet and shower. The shower was of course typical of the 80s also, with frosted glass and a sliding door.

The Vision

Our client came to us with the goal of remodeling this bathroom (and when I say remodeling - I’m talking a complete overhaul!) to a more modern look, but she also wanted to retain a clean, classic aesthetic. We were so excited to move forward with a complete overhaul and re-design to truly help her realize the potential for this space! We loved that the bathroom was so spacious, and it simply needed a unique plan for how to utilize its dimensions in the best way possible while getting a look that can be enjoyed for many years to come. 

The Result

One of our client’s wishes was to replace the existing shower with a frameless shower and to add a relaxing tub to soak in. So, we redesigned the space that previously held the shower and toilet and made this into a large linen closet, with floor to ceiling built-in cabinetry. We love the beautiful contrast of the stained cabinets with the white walls and tilework!

The frameless shower is simply stunning in this space and will be much more enjoyable than the previous shower, which was basically stuck in a closet. LOL It is hard to believe that this bathroom ever contained anything different! 

Natural light makes this gorgeous frameless shower pop even more.

The soaking tub is just a work of art, and we know that our client will find so much peace while relaxing here during the occasional bubble bath! While it does have a touch of modern, the tub still maintains that classic look that our client was hoping for. (P.S. did you notice that there’s no carpet here now?! AND, how chic is the addition of this acrylic tray to the tub? We absolutely adore detailed touches like this!) 

This relaxing soaking tub will be enjoyed for years to come.

The cabinets in the bathroom were previously stark white with chunky hardware. Now, the vanity areas have been fully reinvigorated with mirrors that are just the right size for the space, gorgeous quartz countertops, and accessories that are timeless while making a statement. Where the previous space held one lengthy countertop, there are now separate HIS and HERS vanity areas so that each person can truly enjoy uncrowded space of their own. And we can’t forget the gold chandelier that once illuminated the garden tub! While it was a wonderful addition in the 80s, it won’t be missed with the way this bathroom has now been appropriately modernized and furnished!

And that’s that - our latest bathroom remodel! This project was truly so much fun for us to work on, and we love the transformation of this space. It’s easy to feel like a certain area of your home could never look like what you see in magazines, but trust me - there’s always a way to completely reinvigorate a space! We are thankful our client trusted us with taking this space to the next level, and we hope they feel right at home here for a long, long time.

Updates, Surprises, and Cupcakes - Oh My!

Happy November 16th, ya’ll! I hope you are well and staying safe out there! I know it’s been a little while since you’ve seen a blog post from me. We took a short hiatus from blogging in the midst of planning for some exciting things to come in 2021, but...WE’RE BACK! It is SO good to say “hello” here again.

So, I’m sure one of your first thoughts may have been, “What’s the significance of “November 16th”? Well, it’s Ivory Lane Interiors’ 4th Anniversary! I simply couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate with you on this special occasion, and it truly means the world that I get to do what I do — helping my clients realize their visions and create functional and purposeful spaces that are meant to be enjoyed. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for being an integral part of this journey! 

Four years ago on this day, I pushed the live button on the Ivory Lane Interiors website and held my breath. So many emotions were felt that day, but 2 of the strongest were pure excitement and, to be honest, anxiousness! I KNEW that taking the leap of faith to begin my own design business was exactly where God wanted me to be. I fully understood that it would be hard work, but work that was meaningful and that perfectly aligned with my passions. On day one, I didn’t have a single client on the books — I was truly building from the ground up. Ya’ll, I’m sure you agree that starting from scratch is scary, but I think that type of vulnerability is also one of the most rewarding and blessed positions. 

If you know me, you know my faith plays the most important role in my life. It’s my foundation and permeates into everything I do, every decision I make, and every part of my perspective on life. I knew after graduating with my degree in Interior Design and working for several years in the design industry that I wanted to create something special of my own, and despite any fear of the unknown, I couldn’t simply say I trusted God’s plan — I had to act out of that faith, too. 

4 years later, I am just so grateful for everything He has done through this business. That first client did come, and many, many more have come after that. I’ve worked with so many amazing people and have been able to use my passion for residential design in projects that are meaningful for my clients and their homes. I believe that God has blessed me with these opportunities and always try to remember that every good thing has been given by Him.

Before & After: A Bright, Fresh & Oh-So-Comfortable Sitting Room

As y’all might imagine, I have the privilege of walking through countless homes every year, in-person and virtually. Whether we are called in for an initial consultation or hired for a full-service revamp, touring the space and getting the “lay of the land” is a crucial part of each design service that we offer. 

Throughout these walk-throughs and in conversations with our clients, we always notice when themes emerge… and can you guess the biggest goal on our clients’ wishlists?

The desire to transform or repurpose an underutilized space!

We all seem to want our spaces to work better for us, am I right?! The truth is that the majority of our clients usually have the physical space for the type of room they would love to have, but they have a hard time envisioning the space’s potential — and that’s where I come in!

The space I’m sharing with you today is a perfect example of this… not to mention completely inspiring if you’re stuck at home right now and dreaming of some updates!

Before: An Underutilized Space Full of Potential

Our client (let’s call her Lisa!) called us to look at this room located off the entryway in her home. They had just moved in and wanted to finish the space. It  was dark, under-furnished, and trying to function as everything to everyone. It needed a defined purpose and some love! 

Before: Multi-purpose space with loads of potential. And would y’all look at that gorgeous window?!

The Vision

Lisa wanted the room to provide a simple, warm place to sit and read, along with a comfortable space to entertain family and friends.  We walked into this space with its stunning, nearly floor-to-ceiling arched window, the dramatic vaulted ceiling, and those  gorgeous built-in bookshelves. Basically a designer’s dream! All this space needed was a little love. 

The Design Concept

Every great final design starts with an initial concept! We opted for a neutral color palette...nothing overpowering, just simple, bright and calm. Lisa told me she wanted simple patterns (nothing too bold), some classic style, and a touch of farmhouse. 

Y’all know that’s my perfect recipe for a gorgeous and fresh interior!! Let’s see how it turned out…

Ahhhhh…. now that’s a breath of fresh air!! 

I started our design with a “circle this” seating concept. Lisa wanted swivel chairs in the space for easy conversation, so we included two swivel chairs and two wingback chairs. Incorporating these different chair styles added some height and dimension to the room as well. 

Lisa already had some artwork they loved, and the crashing waves in the framed images were great for the space. The lighter wall color really allowed the natural blue hues toPOP. 

We removed some books from the built-in shelves (don’t worry, they found another home!), because we wanted to use the open shelves as a curated display that would make the space feel more open and inviting. 

Another personal touch — Lisa’s husband is a hunter, and as you can imagine, that is pretty big down here in the South, so we integrated antlers into the design as well. We didn’t go overboard, but we did tuck them into the design here and there. Instead of standing out, they blend really well into the neutral color scheme and add a grounding, natural element to the space!

We brought in additional texture through the use of oversized blankets in baskets (readily available for curling up with a good book), a variety of throw pillows, wooden accent furniture, and cozy lamps. These elements not only make the space look incredibly inviting, but they also serve to keep friends, family, and guests comfortable when they come to visit. 

By adding greenery throughout the room and really showcasing natural wood grain finishes in some of our accent pieces, we brought the outdoors into this living room.

How to Design a Small Space in 3 Easy Steps (with Examples!)

We all have that one room in our house (or maybe a few of them) that we can never quite seem to figure out design-wise. Maybe we find ourselves moving the furniture around every couple of months in the hopes of finally finding that perfect layout. 

Maybe we make yet another trip to Hobby Lobby or Target (or order online these days) to try to find new accent pieces that might do the trick and pull the room together, without breaking the bank (you know...just in case they don’t actually look as good as we hope!).

Or maybe we simply avoid that room altogether! Do you have one of those rooms in your home?

The truth is, small spaces can be tough to design, especially without some guidance from a professional. So today I’m sharing a few “tricks of the trade” to help you tackle that small space and make it a room that you can love!

Step 1. Pick a Single Focal Point

In larger spaces, you can get away with a geometric-patterned accent chair, a vibrant multi-colored rug, and bold curtains because you have plenty of wall space and open floor space to help balance the room. 

It’s a little harder to do in a smaller space… but that doesn’t mean the room has to be boring!

I like to advise my clients to start off by selecting a single focal point for the room. Maybe you have a brightly colored desk that is a must-use in your home office. Or maybe you have a piece of artwork that you know has to be the inspiration for your space. Perfect! 

I encourage you to take that focal point and design around it so that the other furniture and decor in the room complements your focal point, instead of competing with it. 

Then you could use solid colors for other furniture, rugs, window treatments, and anything else that you don’t consider the focal point of the room. I promise that once we get done accessorizing later in the process, the room will look anything but boring. Trust me!

Step 2. Choose Multi-Functional Furniture

Every piece counts in small spaces, so we might as well look for items that have dual functionality. These specialty items save you space while allowing your room to work for you in a variety of ways.

If you are designing for a living room or family room, consider built-ins. Maybe your space already has them… and if so, why not use them! If not, think about whether adding a built-in bookshelf, entertainment center, or seating area might gain you some extra space (space that would otherwise be taken up by larger standalone pieces). 

Ottomans with storage are also a great option in living rooms and family rooms. They allow you to store more in the room all while acting as a great foot rest. And they also minimize the clutter by providing a home (out of sight) for all of your essential items. 

Side tables that move over an armchair or the side of a sofa are huge space-savers. They allow you the convenience of an end table without the footprint that a traditional end table consumes. Every inch of floor space is precious in small spaces!

When designing for a bedroom, you could consider a trundle bed with built-in storage underneath. 

Or, if you are designing a guest room that won’t always be used as a bedroom, you could find a sleeper sofa that converts easily and matches the decor of your room. When not being used as a bedroom, y’all just gained another cozy seating area for your family to enjoy!

Step 3. Select Finishing Touches Carefully

Now that we have all of the larger components in place, it is time to focus on adding some personality to the room. This is the moment when we get to bring in patterns, colors, and textures in easy-to-handle quantities that give you that designer feel without overpowering the space. 

You could look for... 

• throw pillows and blankets

• picture frames

• candle holders

• trays (you know I love trays!!)

• anything that complements your focal point

Step outside your comfort zone and select bright colors or varied textures that you may not normally consider. Combining colors, patterns, and textures gives you that boutique designer look you are dreaming of!

Examples of Well-Designed Small Spaces

FOR CLASSY COLOR IN A HOME OFFICE

If I love color and want a vibrant home office, why not make this magenta desk the focal point? To help it stand out, I left the rest of the furniture in neutrals (cream, white, grays) and added a pink ruffled pillow for fun! The result? An inspiring and classy home office!

FOR ART AS INSPIRATION

Or if you have a meaningful photograph from a recent adventure hanging on the wall, you could use the colors in the image for your accessories, like curtains, throw pillows, and more. 

Playing up the colors in the artwork won’t take away from it being the focal point… it will actually make the photograph stand out even more!!! A conversation starter and design element all in one...yes, please!

FOR BALANCING WARM & COOL

Or if your focal point is a piece of furniture, like this honeycomb-patterned armchair in cool taupe and white, you can create beautiful balance by adding in some warmth! This brown leather ottoman and wooden desk do the trick! Classy and comfortable at the same time.

FOR SPACES THAT FEEL MORE OPEN

My last tip has to do with... mirrors! Adding mirrors (especially large ones) to your space can really make the room feel larger, brighter, and more open. Don’t believe me? Come see for yourselves, y’all!

This little breakfast nook looks twice the size than it actually is because of the large mirror we propped against the wall. A simple trick that makes a noticeable difference… and is perfect for checking hair and makeup on your way out the door!

ONE FINAL WORD

One final word on accessories in small spaces: less really is more. Small spaces can quickly feel over-cluttered, which makes them feel EVEN smaller and distracts from all the hard work you just put into designing your space! :)

A Budget-Friendly Interior Design Plan that will Wow You!

Picture this for a moment... you arrive at your friend’s home for a party (to celebrate when all of this social distancing is over, hopefully very soon!). You walk in the door and stop in your tracks.

It’s a very simple 4-step process:

1. Discovery Call

We spend 15 minutes with you on the phone learning all about the room that you want help designing. You can tell us what you like about the space currently, what is functioning well for you, and what needs to change. We’ll also ask you about your lifestyle so that we can better understand how the space is used on a daily basis. (You know I’m all about function!!!)

You can also talk us through any design elements that must stay or what you’re okay saying goodbye to. This call helps us get to know your room, but also helps us get to know YOU, the fabulous homeowner, so that we can cater the space to your particular personality and style!

2. Measurements and Photos

We will ask that you take pictures of the room from varying angles so that we can get a feel for the space without ever being in it. We’ll also ask for measurements of the space, as well as of any items that you would like to keep. This includes measurements of the floor, windows, doors, and existing furniture. 

We’ll really appreciate it if you can note any ceiling slants that we have to work around, central air vents that can’t be covered up, and outlets that need to be accessible so that we can accurately design your space for both function and style!

3. Questionnaire

At this point in the process, we have a good idea of what you are looking for, but the detailed questionnaire we send your way helps us further dig into your design style so that we don’t miss a single detail. 

 We’ll ask specific questions to get to the heart of your personal aesthetic and help us discover any additional wants or needs for the space.

4. Design Creation & Delivery

Once we have all of this data collected from you, we’ll get to work designing your space! We’ll create design concepts and furniture plans and then provide links to purchase each item. All of this is delivered to you within 3 weeks of sending us your questionnaire.

For those of you concerned that you won’t like the selections, don’t worry! You have the opportunity to make 2 changes after we deliver your design packages before additional charges apply. We want it to be perfect for you!!

My Favorite Finishing Touches for Classic, Fresh Spaces

When you think interior design, do you think paint colors and flooring? You aren’t alone! These more prevalent design elements are certainly a large part of any space, but it is the finishing touches and sweet little details that make your home truly unique. 

Finishing touches add color, personality, inspiration, texture, and life. They take a room from ordinary to extraordinary with a few simple, carefully-selected items. 

Today I am delighted to share some with y’all some of my favorite recent finds for classic, fresh spaces!

1. Touches of greenery

Ya’ll, I have to be honest — I have never really been a fan of fake plants (especially those ones you see in restaurants that obviously haven’t been touched, or even dusted, since the restaurant opened...you know what I mean, right?!)

All joking aside, I do believe that every once in a while, the right artificial plant can add a nice touch to your space. This eucalyptus arrangement from Target is designed to look just like the real deal, and comes in a simple white pot that can fit right in with nearly any home decor.

If you don’t have a green thumb, then I would suggest adding this simple and sweet plant to a coffee table, desk, or bookshelf. It provides the perfect amount of greenery without any necessary upkeep.

2. Bold, versatile trays

I love a good tray! Although, often overlooked when shopping for finishing touches, trays add variety and function to a space. I think that the placement of a tray on the ottoman in a living room or on the dresser in a bedroom makes it feel lived in and inviting. 

Adding a colorful tray, or even one with a sophisticated bold pattern and metallic accents (like this one from Hobby Lobby), can bring personality to your space. It’s also the perfect item if you’re looking to add an inexpensive detail to your space — great price point!

You could place it on a bed, dresser, vanity, bookshelf, or ottoman and add on decorative accents like a small vase of flowers or a scented candle. Better yet, add some cookies and sweet tea when you are expecting guests to draw attention to this adorable design detail and you will look like a design pro!

3. Throw pillows with unique accents

This Etsy shop, Stitched by Grace NY, has the cutest pillows, y’all! These cotton and faux leather pillows with multi-directional stripes feature a concealed zipper and neutral tones to complement any room.

An adorable throw pillow is so versatile. Toss it on the couch, a bed, or even pile a couple in a basket for a cozy accent in your home. Not only are these pillows sweet and stylish, but I love that they are made by a small business owner. You know I love to support other small businesses!!! 

4. Large woven baskets

Large baskets are a GREAT way to add texture and color to your space. Plus, they double as storage and who couldn’t use more ways to organize blankets, throw pillows, and other accessories (am I right?!)

This decorative storage basket from Target features a handwoven design and dark espresso finish. It is easy and inviting, and keeps all those miscellaneous items in one place.

5. Book-style boxes

Boxes add character to your space and help you to be more organized, too. I love these distressed white and gray boxes from Hobby Lobby — they look like books AND you can hide your phone cords, remotes, tablets (and let’s face it, anything else really!) inside them.

Place these on a bookshelf, stack them on a nightstand, or add them to a coffee table. They make for a clean looking space while maintaining the convenience of having your necessities nearby.

6. Wreaths for all seasons

A cute wreath is the perfect way to personalize your space and add a little extra character to a room. This Etsy shop, The Burlap Cottage, has wreaths that are fun, simple, and sweet!

The wreath below is a great year-round decoration that works well within any design style from modern minimalist to rustic farmhouse (and everything in between). 

The front door isn’t the only place to hang a wreath like this one (although that would be beautiful!) Consider hanging them on a wall, an interior door, or on an interior window so that YOU can enjoy it from inside your home!

How to Create Your Home Renovation Budget

Whenever anyone asks me what a renovation budget looks like, my first thought is… That’s a loaded question!!!

Kitchen and bathrooms cost the most when it comes to renovations, but space isn’t the only factor. We also have to consider the selections, fixtures, and finishes! For example, what kind of flooring? Hardwood, tile, concrete, or carpet etc.?

And then there’s the whole construction side of things. Are we moving walls, adding beams, changing gas/electrical, installing new plumbing? This will change the budget, too!

The list is almost endless!. ;)

Today I’m going to share all the factors that go into creating a renovation budget, along with some tips for doing it yourself. If there’s a bright and dreamy space in your future, a budget is step number one! And it starts here, y’all...

What are your renovation goals?

Every great project begins with... goals!! When first thinking about a renovation, it’s a great idea to think in terms of how the space will be used. For example, will the space be used for entertaining family and guests? 

Then, we can think about the aspects of the space that will meet this desired purpose. Does it need more room? More natural lighting? A style that feels fresh and current? Better functionality? Storage? Etc.

What will achieve your goals?

Now that we know everything we want to change about the space, we can make a list of what needs to happen to make those changes. For example, a list for a guest bathroom remodel might look like this:

• Shower + glass door

• Tile for shower

• Tile flooring

• Toilet

• Sink

• Faucets and plumbing

• Vanity cabinetry and hardware

• Lighting

• Oversized mirror

• Contractor, labor, and installation

If you hire an interior designer, they will help you figure all of this out. At the beginning of a project, I always do an estimate for our clients. This includes a line item list of costs and the total predicted investment. 

I also have the contractor come in to give an estimate at the beginning, usually before I even share a breakdown of the product and pricing. But more on that next, y’all!

Who is needed on your renovation team?

Though quality is important, the amount budgeted for a renovation will change depending on the roles wanted and needed for the project. Here are a few key players:

INTERIOR DESIGNER (Design Fees)

An interior designer oversees budgeting, creating a design concept, managing the contractor, ordering products and finishes, scheduling, receiving deliveries, problem solving, and installation. An interior designer isn’t required for every home renovation, but without one, these responsibilities fall to the homeowner.

If that’s the case, I suggest factoring in extra time and another 10% of the budget for unforeseen circumstances. There are a lot of things to be aware of when renovating, and TV gets one thing right — it’s 100% normal for something unexpected to pop up.

CONTRACTOR / BUILDER (Labor Fees)

Meeting with a contractor and getting a labor estimate is critical for budgeting. As with designers, the rate depends on who does the work. Certain contractors only do certain types of work.  

When asking for a quote, it’s also worth finding out whether grout, nails, and supplies are something they purchase or something you need to purchase. Take notes. It all adds up!

ENGINEER OR ARCHITECT (Inspection or Design Fees)

Not every project needs an engineer or architect, but it’s possible. If the project requires extensive moving of walls, you may want a structural engineer to assess the integrity of the building. For significant exterior remodeling, an architect is a good idea. (This is something your interior designer or GC can give you advice on.)

Lastly, once you have quotes from the folks who will be helping with your renovation, we can move on to budgeting for materials.

What is your ideal quality level?

This is an important question to ask before we can calculate a budget, because everything boils down to quality. Some good questions to ask are:

• Is this your forever home? Do you want everything to be your dream appliances, high-end finishes and fixtures? 

• What quality levels do you want for fixed elements like lighting, countertops, faucets, hardware, appliances (depending on the space). 

• Are you keeping any pieces that are already in the space? Which ones? A designer can also help you answer these questions.

Once these questions are answered, I suggest doing some quick item-by-item price research. Write down each product (such as a light fixture, that gorgeous backsplash tile, or a range stove) and the cost.

Then you can tally it up along with the labor quotes to get an estimated budget! I love spreadsheets for this!!

PRO TIP: When writing in and adding up line items, find those 1 or 2 things that you can’t live without and budget for them first. Then, budget the rest. If your dream features are prioritized, you’re more likely to be over the moon when all is said and done!

What furnishings are needed?

Furnishings are usually a totally different budget than a remodel, and another phase of the project. But I see these two budgets intermixed a lot, so let’s talk about it! Furnishings include furniture, window treatments, area rugs, accessories and decor. Anything that isn’t physically connected to the home. 

If you’re looking to style the space after the renovation, I suggest repeating the same itemized process above to create a budget. A little planning will make all the difference in getting the dream result!

What Does an Interior Designer Do?

Happy New Year, y’all!!! I hope you had a Blessed Christmas and that you’re feeling inspired to make 2020 the best year (or decade) yet!!

In December’s post, I mentioned that I’d be giving you more advice for making your home the fresh, functional, and classic space you’ve always dreamed it could be. But before we dive into the serious stuff (like creating a plan and a budget), I wanted to share a fun, behind-the-scenes post with you for January! 

Today’s topic....

What does an interior designer really do??

Y’all, I love this question!!! Before I decided to study interior design in college, I imagined that designers’ days were spent picking out pretty fabrics, flipping through paint swatches, and expertly styling accessories. But once I did my research, I realized there’s a whole lot more to it than that! And that it’s even better than I could have imagined!!

Today I’m sharing 6 things that most people don’t know that interior designers do! Can y’all guess what they are?

1. Prepare Construction Documents & Comply with Building Codes

Basically, “interior architecture” is the best way to explain what we do. Interior designers can draw the construction documents which include  floor plans, dimensioned plans, electrical plans, lighting plans (reflected ceiling plans), elevations, and building sections. They are conceptual drawings that usually need to be stamped by an architecture, but are ready to go for contractors.

These are all detailed drawings that describe exactly how an interior is supposed to look. These are drawings  meant to be so detailed that crew is working on the site know exactly what to do with a General Contractor or Interior Designer there.

Also, ADA codes and building codes in general are very important when we are drawing up plans.. These are important to any renovation or design project, and an interior designer can help you with all of that!

2. Help You Create a Smart Budget (and Stick to It)

Budget is an extremely important part of any home project, whether it be a revamp with just furniture or a total remodel. Your interior designer should sit down with you at the beginning of the project, before designing even starts, to see what main features are important to you and develop a budget for bringing those features to life. 

Your designer can also help provide insight on which products and materials are worth splurging on (long-lasting investments) and which could be “save” items. Of course, the final choice is yours! The important part is having a defined budget to drive the project forward.

3. Create a Design with Function and Purpose

Another expertise in a designer’s skillset is in designing wayfinding, the way someone navigates the room. This is one where function and purpose meet simplicity meet beauty — and that’s my FAVORITE part of design!! 

We’ll design a space that’s more than beautiful. It will be designed for the life you have (making it easier!) and for the extra amazing life you WANT to live!

4. Professionally Manage Your Project

Your interior designer wears many hats when designing the space and in managing the process of creating it. Your designer and team manage the project to make sure everything is taken care of and everything is run smoothly. This includes on-site check-ins, communicating between all the people involved, and even ordering, tracking, and receiving product shipments.

This also means that YOU get to relax, stick to your usual schedule, and let your designer handle the details! Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, right? ;)

5. Advocate and Look Out for You

Naturally, remodels are full of things that will come up. For example, if the contractor is installing the floor and he needs more tile, or maybe he has a question about the layout/pattern of the tile. The interior designer will take care of that for you. You are not having to answer every question the contractor has and you do not have to worry about the product being there on time.

Most interior designers will also have managed so many projects over their careers that they can spot any issues from a mile away… and stop them before they start! 

6. Decorate Your Home for the Final Reveal! (in some cases)

Interior designers and decorators have slightly different roles. Interior designers are involved mainly with everything that is physically connected to the home, like its floor plan, electrical, countertops, flooring, plumbing, light fixtures, etc. Decorators, on the other hand, typically specialize in soft furnishings, which includes your furniture, window treatments, and accessories. And then, there are professionals who do both! 

For me, I LOVE to do both! Seeing everything come together from start to finish is what makes this career so exciting and impactful!

I LOVE the idea of pantry labels… for yourself or to give as a gift! (Who doesn’t love to at least try to be organized? I’m raising my hand over here!!!) To turn these into Christmas decor, you could get red jars and stick the labels on for candy, cereal, sugar, flour, cookies, you name it.

OR, you could fill a jar with hot cocoa mix, label it, and give it as a hostess gift! The labels come in MANY custom colors, so you can find something you know your recipient will love all year 'round ;)

5. Custom Printed Kitchen Towel

Christmas time isn’t only about red and green. It’s about family and friends. I can’t think of a sweeter gift than to give a relative a dish towel with a meaningful family recipe on it. It will last for years and years and can even be passed down if you would like! How sweet is that?!?!

How to Design Your Home for Peace & Family Connection

I can’t keep it in a second longer — I have something to tell Y’ALL!!!

Ivory Lane Interiors Officially has a BLOG!

I thought for the 3rd anniversary of Ivory Lane Interiors, “How can I celebrate in a BIG way?” Why not a BLOG?!?!? So here it is, Ivory Lane’s first EVER blog post! Grab all the balloons, cake and confetti you can and let’s have a party!!!

Okay back to business… well sort of….  before I dish on all things design, I want to say THANK YOU!!!!!

Yes, YOU…. We couldn’t have done this without our amazing clients and supporters. Truly. These past 3 years haven’t been a piece of cake (although, I love me some cake! Actually mainly the icing!!! I might have to go grab a cupcake with a TON of icing to celebrate), but designing homes for incredible people has been an honor and such a BLESSING!!!

It makes my heart so happy when I get to the end of a project or hey, even in the middle of a project, where the client says, “I love everything and how it is coming together!!!”  

As a thank you, I’m dedicating the Ivory Lane Interiors Blog to ALL Y’all! (P.S. I thought long and hard about how to address you guys. Even thinking that maybe y’all is not the proper way, but hey it’s in my DNA to say y’all so here we go! LOL.)

I can’t wait to give you our best tips and inspiration for functional, beautiful and purposeful spaces that bring joy to every day at home. So let’s dive into this month’s topic, with 5 ways to inspire peace and deep family connection — that is right, just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

1. Create a Welcoming Overall Aesthetic

We’re all about simplicity here at Ivory Lane, and there’s a good reason for that. Life is SO hectic sometimes and simplicity is something that we could all you sometimes. (Can I get an AMEN?) 

But this season, simplicity can do even more for y’all!!! It can be welcoming, warm, and promote family connection! There are several ways design can do this, but one of my favorite ways is…. TEXTURE.

Soft textures are key to creating feelings of warmth and comfort. Combined with light, open spaces, texture makes it feels comfy and uplifting all at once. (I’m getting excited just thinking about it! Cue a cold winter day with the fire going and a fur blanket. Ummm YES, please!...) 

So you might be thinking, Okay, how is that done? Well, you can add soft textures to your common areas with throw blankets, pillows, cozy rugs, or drapery. A soft simple linen drape can work wonders to a space! It makes a huge difference to the look of the space — and how you can enjoy it! 

2. Create a Mood with Lighting

Imagine y’all are all  cozy in the living room... snuggling into the sofa, blankets everywhere and sipping warm drinks. (Hot chocolate anyone? it’s that time of year!) Now image mood lighting setting the scene, and it’s perfect, because who wants BRIGHT and HARSH lighting? (Ummm… no one!) LOL

If you have recessed lighting and you think that might be too harsh, add a dimmer to it or just have one recessed light that can highlight one area light the fireplace and the rest can be turned off.

Because no one wants to feel like they are in a board meeting or hospital with that harsh lighting.  It is a great way to make family occasions feel more intimate and special.

For spaces shared in the evening hours, warm lighting is the perfect touch. You can always have the recessed lighting or lamps on dimmers. 

3. Embrace an Inclusive Kitchen Layout

The heart of the home is usually the kitchen, and the chef probably doesn’t want to feel all alone as he/she prepares the yummy food. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to lay out kitchens to include all your favorite people.

An open concept space is ideal, but whether that’s an option or not, islands in the kitchen are GREAT for bringing people together. An island (or bar top seating, if an island is a no-go) will help bridge the gap between the host and the guests.

If an island or bar top seating isn’t possible this year, another option could be setting up a soda or snack station at an available kitchen counter. (Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love snacks, where’s the popcorn and M&Ms?!??)

4. Rearrange Living Room Furniture

Family rooms and living rooms most likely have seating pointed toward a main focal point, usually the TV. Yes, this setup is perfect for Game Day, and yes, it’s also true that Game Day has its own way of bringing the family together. BUT... 

For those football-free moments (there will probably be some!), there’s nothing better than sharing conversation and connection with loved ones. Like that cozy, cuddly sofa scene I described in Tip #2. ;)

So, how’s this kind of connection created? Instead of all furniture facing the TV, turn the sofa and chairs to face each other and encourage talking. It doesn’t hurt to have some soft throw blankets at the ready either. ;) 

5. Fine-Tune the Overall Flow

When it comes to entertaining (or just life in general), it’s important that one room flows well into the next!! These transitions make life at home easier and more peaceful, so the house is working for and with the family that lives there. (SO COOL.)

Same concept when it comes to entertaining...

For example, let’s say you’ve got a sweet hot chocolate making station in the kitchen. Once the cocoa is stirred and the marshmallows are added, where will people go next? The living room? If so, position the cocoa station on the side of the kitchen closest to that room, so there’s no cross-traffic tripping up the chef.

Another example could be carrying fresh-out-of-the-oven-food from the kitchen to the dining room. Where are the utensils for each dish? Buried in kitchen drawers and ready to cause chaos? Or already placed conveniently along the path from oven to table? ;)

Sure, these are small things, but they contribute big time to the peace and joy of a smoothly flowing and fun family event!!

And there you have it, that’s 5!
